Stolberggasse 31-33, Vienna, Austria. March 2012.

After an exchange with $makepictures I decided to heed his suggestion and add the text I shared with him to the image.

Although the graphic composition shows a staircase the memories I wanted to capture were different, if I may explain:
First the light and shadow, which always were for me hope and fear/dispair; The quality of this light bares some despair for me too since it is that of a rainy day; then beyond the shadows to the left there is the door behind which the twins lived... they were funny... the hat by the door fits that, as well as the door being a comic version of a cyclopes; the cyclopes from "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" traumatized me as a five year old; Then the many small letterboxes... their copper is almost like gold... I remember imagining that there were precious toys hidden in them.
Then there is the shadow of a man going up the stairs, which I got in through a digital "double exposure" to reenact an incident that formed me as a person: after watching TV with my parents they switched it off and as I stood there I saw a ghost of a man beside the TV. I remember shouting a couple of times without a voice and then my voice came back. I insisted that there stood a ghost and my father insisted there was none... but then he gave me a scientific explanation (about high contrast and how the eye keeps afterimages)... it was so fascinating that I got interested in science as a way to deal with the "demons".

Update 29. May 2012: added background information text.

This is a memory from childhood from an adult. Children lack the perspective to know about up and down staircases, though of course they are there. Very evocative. I spent part of my childhood in Vienna.

I did not know that about children!

How old were you when you were in Vienna?

How very interesting and as I suspected the photograph has rich personal levels. Good to know what some of them are. You might consider a presentation with the photograph at the top and an area of text below in your own handwriting.

There must be something about Vienna and spooky things. I was there at ages 6,7,8 starting in 1957. I was in a bit of a sink-or-swim cloud during that period. We came from New York. I went to a French school having never spoken French before that was filled with mostly Austrian kids from well-to-do families who did not speak English. I had a new step father as my natural father had been killed in an accident two years prior. My mother made it clear to my brother and me that we could not tell anyone our father had been Jewish (she was Catholic). There were outlines of swastikas that had been removed from the outside of our apartment building off the Opernring. My parents believed children were to come out of their rooms only to meet guests, be polite and then disappear. These transitions and complications are associated to Vienna for me. My only happy memories involve whipped cream, marzipan and building incendiary devices with my friends, setting them off in bomb craters where we looked for ordinance. My worst memories involve the crypts at St Stephens with cages filled with children's coffins among other "delights" and the amusement park which was seedy, grey and always made me puke. I saw no ghosts because that's pretty much, post war, how most people walked around.

Thank you so much for sharing that with me, Josh, it means a lot!
I can relate to a lot of what you wrote through my own experience... although I left Vienna when I was six.

I think you are right that the text belongs to the image.
